Four Great Inventions: Gunpowder

Well over a thousand years ago, some Chinese alchemists were trying to whip up a recipe for an elixir of immortality but accidentally stumbled upon explosive results.

And BOOM! just like that, gunpowder was invented.

Since guns weren’t invented yet, they obviously couldn’t name their concoction “gunpowder”, so they settled on “fire medicine” and called it a day.

They quickly discovered that their new invention had all sorts of useful applications like beautiful fireworks displays, demolition, and scaring away evil spirits. They then began trading it along the Silk Road until gunpowder eventually made its way to the Western world where it was adapted for use in war and hunting.

So, the next time you watch a beautiful fireworks display (or go hunting, for that matter), please remember to pray for China’s billions.
