Weekly Devotion Jonah 4:2

“And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.”

After Nineveh hears Jonah’s message and repents, Jonah finally reveals why he was so reluctant to go there in the first place. He knew that God is gracious, merciful, and slow to anger. He knew God would forgive them if they repent. He just didn’t want them to repent. He hated the people of Nineveh. He didn’t want to give them the opportunity to hear his message and be saved from God’s wrath.

Lord, thank You for being such a good and gracious God. Thank You for being so willing, even more than Jonah was and even more than I am, to see people saved. Do a work in my heart, Lord. Make me see lost people with the same compassion that Christ sees them with. I want to make your name known, Lord.
