Many people ask me, “Why China? Why would you choose to move to the other side of the world and live in a place like China?” With this blog post, I hope to shed some light on that question.
“So, tell me what you know about Jesus?” Daniel was wanting to share the gospel with a university student we had just met in Guizhou, China.
Daniel, myself, and the rest of our team were on a short-term trip in China during Christmas break of my sophomore year of college. Our goal was to share the Christmas story and the gospel in university classrooms. The students wanted to practice English, and we could spread the gospel.
As we walked through the university, our group ran into this student and Daniel initiated the conversation. The student looked confused and asked Daniel to repeat himself.
“Do you know about Jesus?” he repeated.
Still confused, the student mustered a, “What is Jesus?”
I froze. My mind was racing as I thought about that question over and over again: “What is Jesus?”
I grew up in the southern United States. I had never encountered someone who didn’t know who Jesus is, much less someone who didn’t even know that He is a “Who” and not a “What”.
Daniel proceeded to share the gospel, and as he did I was lost in thought. I couldn’t fathom what had just taken place. Sure, I had been on short-term trips before. But, those were to Brazil and the UK. The people in those countries had at least heard of Jesus before. But, the young man standing in front of me was different.
That simple question, “What is Jesus?” haunted me for a year or more. I couldn’t get it out of my head. More importantly, I couldn’t get a country filled with people who would each ask the same question out of my head.
Christ was obviously not yet named in this part of the country. There were many who had yet to hear the good news of a loving Savior. What about other parts of China? Were there some there who had yet to hear as well? Something had to be done. Someone had to tell them.
After wrestling with much thought over many months, I knew what I had to do. I had to give my life to serve Jesus Christ and make His Light known in the dark country of China.
