“I have see all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.”
Solomon pursued myriad things in his lifetime to find fulfillment. He pursued pleasure, and he pursued wisdom. But after all his pursuits he discovers that all is vanity and vexation of spirit. At the end of the book, however, he concludes that the whole duty of man is to fear God and keep His commandments (12:13). Fearing the Lord and keeping His commandments is not in vain, because they require living according to the purpose that our Creator has given us. What better way to live than according to the purpose given you by your Creator?
Lord, thank You for the wisdom that You give us in the book of Ecclesiastes. Thank You that though we are unable to find fulfillment in Your creation itself, we can find fulfillment in You and obedience to You. Thank You for revealing Your truth and Your will to us in the Bible. Thank You for showing us that You desire for us to get the gospel to the world. Please help me to obey and do my part in fulfilling Your great commission. According to Your Word, all else is vanity and vexation of spirit.
